Healthy Girl! Fridays: What cardio exercise burns the most calories?

Today's Workout: 4 miles (planned)/Supreme 90-Tabata Inferno

Heyyyy Brickhouses!!

TGIF!!! Soooo glad it's Fridayyyyy!! This week was so interesting! I ran 15 miles (11 at press time) in all!! Real talk, that is probably the most I have run consistently in my entire life!! I'm feeling good ya'll :)

Yesterday was my rest day for running, but NOT for Supreme 90. I just flat out didn't wake up at 5:15 as I have scheduled to do it! So this morning I have Tabata Inferno which I am not exactly looking forward to! Tabata feels good at first, once you hear "It's only 20 seconds on 10 seconds off" you get excited! But at the end your muscles are SCREAMING!!! Remember when Coach Christian did a Tabata workout with me? Check it out here.

I plan on doing a vlog recap of this week's workouts and lessons learned sometime this weekend! I got a lot of positive feedback which encouraged me to do another one! If you want to make sure you don't miss it, make sure to subscribe to my YT channel here

Q.   I have been working out on my treadmill at home for 45 mins a day and I’m noticing that I am not burning the amount of calories that I would normally burn on the elliptical...I avg. like 200 cals on the treadmill and about double that on an elliptical for the same time period. How can I maximize my workout efforts for the best results with my home gym? I have free weights and a weight machine but nothing beats an elliptical work out I use to get going to a gym. Should I just buy an elliptical? HELP!

A.   Hey Chya!
Yours is a simple fix! The treadmill (with out any incline) is only working in one direction, where as the elliptical is working in multiple directions, hence the larger burn.
For similar results on the treadmill and the elliptical, push up the incline to about a 5 when you're working on the treadmill. You'll burn about the same amount of calories while getting an intense workout (your legs are definitely gonna feel it, trust me!) I hope that helps!

  2. Thank you Kyla! :-) I usually have the incline on 3 but I started off with it on 7.5 (ahh!!! BURN!)...once I realized that DEATH was near for me I turned it down to 3 and maximized my speed in its place... Would you suggest putting Velcro weights on my wrist and ankles to burn more calories? Literally I will have the speed on the treadmill at “Maximum Fat Burn”, and be on the machine for 50-60 minutes (sweating my life away), 5 times a week, all to only loose a measly “200 calories”… says the treadmill (that’s a total of 3mi)…. Something’s not adding up.

Ideally I would like to lose 30lbs before July. I decided not to weigh myself until the END of each month so that I won’t get discouraged like times before… Sidebar- I have skipped dinner all week because one of my problems is I over eat too late… so instead of triggering my “bad habit” I have skipped eating after 4pm all together (I get home at about 7pm then I work out)… I noticed that you eat a lot of lentils so I bought some pre-made from Trader Joes last night…. Do you have any suggestions for me when it comes to my workouts and eating habits?

  4. Hey Chya,
Something must be wrong with your treadmill, because you should be burning waaay more calories than it says you are. Doing weighted cardio is good, but its really easy to injure yourself if you start off with too much weight, so make sure to start small.
As far as 30lbs by July, that is one of the S.M.A.R.T. -est goals I've heard in a long time, SMART being Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.
As far as food goes, DON'T SKIP MEALS! If you're worried about eating too late, don't eat the traditional 3 meals, instead eat 5-6 small meals every 2 or 3 hours. That way, you're never starving, but never too full. Eating foods like lentils is really good because you're getting fiber (which keeps you full) and protein ( which helps your body build muscle).
Speaking of protein, you should have some kind of protein post workout so your body doesn't feed on muscle for energy, because the more muscle you have, the more effective your body is at burning fat ( for every pound of muscle you have, your body burns an additional 35-50 calories a day, so if you have 10lbs of muscle, thats an additional burn of 350-500 calories!)

I hope this helps! Feel free to hit me up for clarification!
